English III & IV: Quarter 2 Question 1 on Personal Choice Book- Due 12/5!

Tell me a little bit about your new book choice. What book did you choose to read for this next book project? Why did you select this book? In the few pages you have read, what impressions do you get about the setting, characters, plot, etc? Has the introduction captured your attention already? Why or why not? What specifically is good or bad about the introduction, and what would you do to change it if has not not captured your attention right away?

Be sure to elaborate on your response! I don't want to see a bunch of simple sentences!

Example of a "not so good" answer:

"I chose Hunger games. Chose it cuz it is good and there is a movie. I read 10 pages and didn't get any impressions. I think it is going to be so good though. The introduction has captured my attention,  and I am looking forward to the rest of it."

Main characters often have traits (or flaws) that make them similar to characters in other books. Compare the main character(s) of your book to the character(s) of another book you have read, or of a story we have read in class. In what ways are the characters similar to each other, and in what ways are they different? If these characters were to meet, what could they learn from each other?

English IV- Quarter 2 Question 1 due 11/ 12!

As we have been reading Oedipus Rex, we have discussed dramatic and verbal irony several times. In your book have there been any examples of irony? Describe the situation in detail (what is happening in the situation, what makes it ironic, etc.) and provide specific text evidence from the book to support your answer.

If there is no irony whatsoever in your book, please give me an overview of what's going on in your plot. Tell me how you feel about the plot of your book. What part of the plot are you in (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution)? What plot events have come as a surprise to you? What is your opinion on the development of any of the elements of plot (does your author do a good job of developing the plot? How is the pacing?)? Are the plot events believable? Which ones? How so? If they are not believable, why aren't they, and what would you do to change them? Use specific examples from your text!

English III- Question 3! Due 10/17!!!!

What plot events have come as a surprise to you? What is your opinion on the development of any of the elements of plot (does your author do a good job of developing the plot? How is the pacing?)? Are the plot events believable? Which ones? How so? If they are not believable, why aren't they, and what would you do to change them? Use specific examples from your text!

English IV- Due 10/8!

Often times, the protagonists (or minor characters) of a story demonstrate characteristics of the classic hero and quests that we have discussed in class. How does your protagonist or plot resemble the hero and quest, which hero/quest characteristics (extraordinary birth, goal/ quest, journey, friend or guide, danger, darkness, success, qualities, tragic flaw) does the book include? How is your protagonist different from the heroes we have read about in class? Use specific examples from your book to support your opinions.

English III- Question 2 Due 10/2!

Often, the protagonist of a story is unique from other characters that surround them. Based on what you have read so far, how is  the protagonist in your story a unique individual? What qualities or characteristics make them stand out? In what ways do their thoughts and/or actions relate to the Transcendental ideas that we have discussed in class? IF you feel that your protagonist is NOT a unique individual, explain why you think this. How does your protagonist represent ideas that are opposite to the Transcendental ideas we've discussed? Support your answer using specific examples from your book.

First of all, what book are you reading? Then, tell me about the main character(s) of your books--their names, personality traits, motivations, inner qualities. Why do they do what they do? What is the conflict they encounter along the way? How do they react to this conflict? Are their actions justified? Do you admire or disapprove of them? Are they realistic; do they remind you of people you know?

Which pages did you read during this time (list page numbers)? Write a brief summary of what has happened so far. What do you know about the setting, plot, and characters already? Did the introduction catch your attention immediately? How so? If not, what would have made the introduction more interesting for you?

Quarter 4 Question 3! Due Thursday 5/2!

Dialogue and description can often provide inspiration or insight into themes for readers. What is one passage from your book that has been particularly inspiring or insightful? What is the message the author intended (presumably), and what did the passage mean to you? Be sure to include your specific passage, and cite the quote!


Be sure you are meeting the requirements detailed in the RW Response Rubric (see "Useful Documents" tab)!

Just a friendly reminder that your book projects will be due on the day of your final exam! If you are a senior, your book project will be due on your last day of school (that's only 3 and 1/2 weeks away folks)! So, if you haven't been making a lot of progress in your book, start kicking it into gear! :)

Quarter 4 Question 2: Due 4/10!

Based on the pages you have read so far (and you should be making lots of progress), talk about the book's structure. Is it a continuous story, or interlocking short stories? Does the timeline move forward chronologically, or back and forth between past and present? Does the author use a single viewpoint or shifting viewpoints? Why might the author have chosen to tell the story the way they did, and what difference does it make in the way you read or understand the story?
